I should start by saying I have quite an unusual CV. However the knowledge which I have acquired has an indefinable value and cannot be learnt in any classroom, nor indeed does it come with an M.B.A. Having been raised in the somewhat austere 1950’s era I was, I can say, blessed with learning at a young age disciplines, such as thrift, work ethic, decency, and respect for elders. From the age of 12 I had my own money, “as in”- I had earned it. That is to say, apart from 2.5 pence per week pocket money my earnings came from a combination of milk, bread, ice cream and paper rounds. This involved starting work every morning around 5.30. At such a young age being virtually self- funding- self-supporting, was an unforgettable and very empowering experience. I can’t describe the satisfaction and thrill in being able to go out and purchase for example the latest hip shoes or a pop hits record, with a pocket full of your OWN hard earned money.Not like during the last 30 years where mum and dads credit card pays for you the kids have the latest Man United top. The fact I probably had to “save up” for two months along the way, made it even more satisfying. This was of immense value as I was gaining from an early age fiscal awareness. I was hopeless and lazy at school resulting in my leaving early at age 15 (Xmas 1961). I began as an apprentice barber (3 years) then moving on to working on the production line at the local Vauxhall car factory. I then went on to drive mini cabs in London during the late 60’s.In 1971 I entered the life assurance industry with a firm called Provident Life Assurance Co, who were based in the City. This proved to be a major turning point and life changing move for me. I was more or less thrown in at the deep end finding myself going out every evening knocking on people’s doors (cold calling). This was a massive challenge being at the “sharp end” of what was and still is regarded as one of the toughest products to sell. Mainly because there is no immediate tangible gain for the customer. It may come in 30 years’ time either by death or policy maturity. Within 2 years I had moved up to the position of number one company salesman throughout the entire UK. I freely admit I was perhaps not the most technically gifted of salesman. But I was very dogged and resolute and disciplined which were undoubtedly my main asset. To explain, I was scheduled to begin door knocking at 6.30 PM, and work through to 9.30PM. I never once deviated from these times regardless of whether it was rain hail or snow. I remember once being out in the town of Milton Keynes at approx. 9.25 PM when I must have already knocked on 100’s of doors, and each time had been given the standard no-no. I was soaked to the bone, freezing cold, but as usual, determined not to curtail my shift. At 9.29 which was exactly the last call, I managed to sell a policy. As was so often the case before I learned my colleagues had all given up early due to the weather or the other excuse was” I could not find anybody interested”. My maxim is even if you aren’t naturally talented, make up with it through extra endeavour and go that extra mile. I began in business in 1974 opening an Estate Agency with the princely sum of £[Link Removed]. I developed this business from scratch into a property development company employing a number of staff and managed to purchase from the profits a million pound house, which I own to this day. I lost almost everything in the last recession of the early 90's but managed to come up trumps again in difficult times. With no capital I identified in Eastern Europe scope for introducing ladies from Czechoslovakia who would be interested in marrying British Men. I knew of the potential as I married a Czech lady myself. The business flourished through ads in the Sunday Times and we were featured on national TV twice where the documentary followed the fortunes of two of our men meeting their ladies for the first time in Prague. This was a unique and niche market which nobody else had thought of. Having two years of great success everybody jumped on the coat tails of my initiative. Then on to exporting of ladies fashion clothes to Prague (the first company to do this) This was good for a couple of years but there was at that time a strong mafia influence ...out there which eventually brought my sales to a low level. Not to be deterred a new and pioneering concept... again! We began offering cosmetic surgery services in Prague. We were in fact the very first company in the world to offer this and it was taking a big risk. However it is still going to this day and we are regarded throughout the industry as the conceptual pioneers. Once again we had national TV coverage twice, and led and created innovative new ideas such as "win a facelift" taken up by two national magazines and also a win a facelift by a lottery concept. I should mention both these ideas have been copied by clinics all over the worlds. I have recently started a new business taking world war 2 veterans and students to places of battle during world war 2. Throughout my career I have always been prepared to take a risk and try the unusual and unexpected. Usually (not always) it has worked out ok. I naturally just tend to look at an idea and instead of doing the expected I tend to turn the thing on it's head, and see another angle. I am now age 66 and certainly weak on modern day internet marketing techniques, but most of this expertise can be bought on PPH. What is not so easy to buy is that extra spark of creativity and a brain which sees things differently. I do not possess any business qualifications only went to the "University of Life" and "school of hard knock". I have so far only used PPH in the role of an employer. However my wife suggested to me with my unique experience and my ability to spring back from apparent hopeless and impossible situations I should offer my advice in the role of a freelancer. Having said that, thus far I have not bid for any jobs. I guess after nearly 40 years of living off my wits as an entrepreneur, it’s hard to do a reverse role.
