Advice for Freelancers

Please read the below to ensure you are making the most of PPH and using the system correctly.

  • Stay protected with Escrow

When you place a bid make sure you request a sufficient Client deposit for your job to keep you protected. PPH enforces a minimum of 20% (except for Base + Result Fee jobs where the amount is 10%) but we recommend you request 50% deposit as often the scope of the work may increase beyond the initial budget.

  • Always bill through the site

All work won through PPH, and any recurring work from the Client, must be billed through the site for a period of 12 months, unless the Client has chosen to invoke the Opt-Out clause (see below).

We strongly advise you do not bill outside the site as this may result in your account being suspended and all your profile history lost.

  • Ask for Feedback

When you’ve completed a Job and billed the work through the site, the Client can give you feedback for that work. Feedback enables you to build your profile history which will help you secure more work in the future and push you up the search rankings.

We also reward the Top Freelancers each month with a share of our Earnings and a prominent ‘Top Freelancer of the month’ badge that goes on your profile, that will help you win more work in future.

  • Do not accept free trials

If the client is trying to get you do work for free under the promise that its a trial to be followed by future work we strongly advise that you DO NOT accept it. Please report such jobs to our customer support team who will also advise you what to do if you are in doubt.

  • Ask the Client to fund each milestone

You can request that the Client tops up their Escrow as you deliver parts of the work so that you are always protected and never deliver work beyond what’s held in the Escrow.

  • Do not underbid

A common misconception is that the winning bidders are the cheapest. Data we publish in our PPH Economy reveals that in fact less than 7% of jobs awarded go to the cheapest bid. The winners are those who a) place a realistic bid price for the Client to take them seriously, b) a well thought-out and detailed proposal and c) have built a track record through the site with earnings and feedback.

  • Under-billing

Understating the amount of work in order to bill part of it outside PPH is also circumvention and will be treated as such. We strongly advise you not to do this.

If you feel that there is enough trust built between you and the client and you wish to bill them directly then you can ask the Client to invoke the Opt-Out clause which relieves both parties from your obligation to bill through the site.

  • Opt-Out clause - billing the Client directly

The Client can hire you directly outside of PPH by paying a one-off fee of £500. We still advise that you take this option with caution. PPH facilitates you with a secure and trusted way of working remotely and guarantees your safety when used correctly. Equally, when working through PPH your earnings and feedback will push you up the ranks and ensure you get more work in future. For more details please refer to our Terms of Business.
